Chorus Mundi:About The Choir

Chorus Mundi was formed on 1 January 2001, but the choir's history goes back to February 1965, when the late Denis Coleman founded the Southwark Singers of London.

The range of music and variety of venues continues. In 2001 Chorus Mundi performed the Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and later that year performed opera choruses in Chicago, followed by Dublin and on BBC1's final edition of Comic Relief. In 2002 we took part in the community chorus for the ENO production of Bach's St John Passion at the London Coliseum (shown on BBC2). We performed a Golden Jubilee concert at St James's, Piccadilly, and members of Chorus Mundi feature in the Tiger Aspect film When She Died - Death of a Princess, which was broadcast on Channel 4 on 25 August. There was also time for musical visits to Majorca and Paris.

In 2003 we performed Rachmaninoff's Vespers in Crystal Palace, visited Nice, hosted a visit to Tunbridge Wells and London from The West Suburban Symphony Orchestra of Chicago, and sang in Reims Cathedral.

Opera Gala at Symphony Hall, Birmingham

Highlights of 2003/4 included two Opera Galas under Andrew Greenwood at the Barbican London, and Birmingham 's Symphony Hall, followed by a visit to Lisbon.

In 2005 we visited Antwerp, singing an evening concert in the historic baroque church of St Carolus and providing the music for High Mass in the Cathedral.

In July 2006 we took part in an exciting visit to Australia – see Australia page. During the year we also performed three times in London, at St John's Waterloo; at St Peter's Eaton Square, where our main work was Maurice Duruflé's Requiem; and in Dulwich where we joined with local choirs for a performance of Beethoven's 'Choral' Symphony. The year ended with two Christmas Events, including the Mission to Seafarers 150th Anniversary carol concert. This was held at the historic Temple Church, built by the Knights Templar and consecrated in 1185.

The choir occasionally collaborates with other musical bodies.
